> Humdinger Sportfishing is a private, owner-operated deep sea fishing charter based in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii's Big Island, departing daily from Honokohau Harbor (Slip B-4). Father-and-son captains Jeff and Brett Fay run exclusive Kona fishing charters aboard the historic 37-foot Rybovich "Humdinger," bringing over 50 years of local big-game experience targeting blue marlin, striped marlin, ahi (yellowfin tuna), mahi mahi, ono (wahoo) and short-billed spearfish. > Humdinger Sportfishing is one of Kona's longest-running charter operations, owner-operated by Captain Jeff Fay, who began fishing Kona in 1966 and has run the Humdinger since the 1970s, now alongside his son and Co-Captain Brett Fay. The boat is a classic 37-foot Rybovich Sportfisherman (hull #33, built 1958 by Rybovich Boat Works), tournament rigged with full electronics and Penn International rods and reels. Four charter options are available: a 1/2-day (4 hours), a 3/4-day (6 hours, the most popular and best value), a full-day, and a limited off-peak Flash Sale 1/2-day. Each is a private, exclusive charter where one price books the boat for up to 6 anglers of any age. All bait, ice, rods, reels and tackle are provided, and no fishing license is required. Guests may keep their catch, though tag-and-release of billfish is encouraged for conservation. The marlin exploded onto the short bait and put up a spectacular fight, taking line and jumping several times during the fight. The Humdinger Sportfishing team made a strong showing in day one of the tournament tagging three fish for a total of 600 points, but Heather Masunaga fishing on the Rod Bender landed a 676.5 lb blue marlin in the closing minutes of the first day to take the lead in points and capture the SKIN for day one. Keeping up the pace of day one, the crew of the Humdinger went on to tag two more fish on the second day of the tournament, but Jim Rainey fishing on the Maui Jim weighed the only fish on day two, a 506 pound blue marlin, that was just enough to take the SKIN for the day. Located on the leeward side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Kona is home to one of the United States' most prolific blue marlin bites. You can catch blue marlin every month of the year here, and the Kona boys seem to land at least one grander each season. Most of the tournaments take place in the summer months when the billfish bite with more regularity. Hawaii Fishing Report for Kona - January 2011 Hawaii Fishing Report for Kona - January 2011 January proved to be a hot month for blue marlin fishing in Kona Hawaii once again. According to the Charter Desk, a total of 56 Blue Marlin were caught off the big island near Kona during the month with 34 fish being tagged. The three largest fish weighed were 917 lbs., 606 lbs. and 604 lbs. In addition to a decent blue marlin bite, 50 Shortbilled Spearfish were caught with 14 being tagged, 22 Striped Marlin were caught with 11 being tagged and 23 Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) were also reported.
